Overview
Theyyam is one of India's most extraordinary rituals: in small village shrines across North Malabar, performers spend hours in make-up and costume before becoming the deity they portray, dancing, blessing and speaking to the community through the night.
It is not a stage show, and it is easy to miss or misunderstand. We choose the shrines, confirm the dates with them, and travel with an interpreter who knows the families and the stories. Between performances there is time for the coast, a Portuguese fort, Kerala's martial art and the quiet backwaters of Valiyaparamba.

Arrival in North Malabar
Met at Kannur International Airport and driven to a heritage home near the coast. Over dinner, an introduction to Theyyam — the deities, the families who perform them, and how to watch respectfully.

The first Theyyam
A slow morning, then St Angelo Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1505, and the Arakkal Museum. Rest in the afternoon. After dinner, to a village shrine for a night performance — from the painting of the face to the moment the performer becomes the god.

Kalari and handloom
A late breakfast, then a demonstration of Kalaripayattu at a traditional kalari. Kannur's handloom weavers in the afternoon, and a sunset drive along the long beach at Muzhappilangad.

Backwaters and a fort by the sea
North to Kasaragod: a boat on the Valiyaparamba backwaters and the sea-facing ramparts of Bekal Fort. Depending on the shrine calendar, a second performance tonight or before dawn.

Departure
Breakfast and a transfer to Kannur International Airport.
